Question) What is the difference between a Modular or a Manufactured home?
Answer)A Modular home is built to State code as to where a manufactured home is built to HUD (Housing and Urban Development) A Modular is assigned a State Seal as to a manufactured home will be assigned HUD tag/label number/s (Example of a Modular Seal for the State of Indiana) Seals may vary from state to state.
Question) How do I find the serial number or VIN number to my home?
Answer) There are 2 locations first being on the 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper with the United States map This is called the Data Plate (example) and is located inside the home inside the master bedroom closet affixed to one of the walls or on the back of a wooden cabinet door that covers the metal breaker box cover. The 2ndlocation is on the steel frame of the manufactured home behind where the hitch would have been attached this is stamped into the frame. (If the home is a sectional the same sequence of numbers will be on both halves on the frame.)
Question) What is the Data Plate?
Answer)The Data Plate is an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper with the United States map on the bottom, top left corner will be the manufactures name and directly below will be the serial/VIN number to the home (Click here for an example Data Plate)
Question) The Data Plate has been removed from the home how can I receive a copy?
Answer)You may request a copy of the original plate by calling Friendship Homes 800-862-5858 ext 2215 between the hours of 8am to 5pm Central time, charges do apply.
Question) What are the HUD tags/label and their location?
Answer)A HUD tag or Certificate Label is a metal plate that is affixed to the outside of the manufactured home, it is 2” x 4” and is permanently attached with screws or rivets. On a single section home the label will be located on the off hitch end of the home. On a sectional home each section will have a label this is located on the long ends of the home towards the corner. Each label will have a 6 digit number not 2 labels are numbered the same. Question) The HUD tag/s have been removed from my home, how can I receive a copy?
Answer) HUD does not reissue tags/labels for a manufactured home, however the department can issue a letter of verification for homes, you may request a letter from the Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) by visiting IBTS’ website, contact by phone 703-481-2010 or via fax at 703-437-6894. Charges do apply.
Question)What is a Certificate of Origin vs. a Title
Answer)A Certificate of Origin is provided to the licensed Dealer when the home is built new, it is then between the Dealer and the first time home buyer to pay the tax in the state the home is located in for the state to produce a Title. Fairmont can produce a copy of the Certificate of Origin for 10 years from current year date charges do apply. Requesting a copy please call 800-888-8787 ext 3085 between the hours of 7am to 4pm Eastern Time.
